Conveyor Belt with Distance Sensor (2023)
thread, fabric scraps, 3D printer scraps, time of flight distance sensor, servo motor, Arduino, breadboard, wires, wooden clamp
A conveyor belt whose speed is mapped proportionally to the distance of its spectator from itself. The kinetic sculpture rotates in a blur of colors and textures when perceived from afar, but as the eye moves closer and the belt slows down, the details of the embroidered belt come into focus. Exploring the physics of our visual perception, the conveyor becomes a three dimensionalized film or animation whose speed of play is negotiated by the viewer.
